ETHEL & ERNEST

GB/LU 2016, D: Roger Mainwood, 94 Min.
Animation, OV with Eng. ST, with German voice-over, released for 12+, recommended for 13+

Ethel and Ernest were the parents of the renowned British author and illustrator Raymond Briggs. Based on his graphic novel of the same name (1998), this lovingly hand-drawn animated feature film honours  their memory. It tells the story of two modest, working-class Londoners from the 1920s up to the 1970s. Ranging from the Great Depression to World War II, the invention of the atomic bomb to the moon landing, the rise of radio to the first television sets, they witness radical changes. The film depicts the defining social and political moments of the 20th century and their effect on private life, thus portraying the joys and fears of a whole generation of so-called common people.
