Oliver Twist grows up in the appalling conditions of an orphanage. When he can no longer take the daily abuse, he runs away and joins a group of pickpockets trained by the old Fagin. On his quest to find love he is confronted with numerous obstacles. David Lean’s successful film adaptation draws on the gloomy atmosphere illustrated in Charles Dicken’s novel of the same name. It portrays the ugly face of 19th century London society in images that are both scary and beautiful. A milestone of film history, this movie centres on poverty and the raw struggle for survival on the streets.
