CHI/ARG 2016, Director: Pepa San Martin, 93 min., feature film, OV with English subtitles, released 6, recommended 10

The 12-year-old Sara lives with her younger sister, her mother, and her mother’s partner. Their mother’s lesbian relationship is hardly extraordinary for the girls, and their family’s everyday life resembles that of most families: eating together, laughing, arguing, and making up. But their family constellation does not always meet with acceptance. When their father sues for custody, this family is endanger of coming apart at the seams. Subtly and without over-dramatization, RARA questions the hegemonic concept of families. It’s not same-sex parents, but society’s reactions and particularly puberty that precipitate the adolescents’ plunge into emotional chaos. (MK)
