IND 2016, Director: Nagraj Manjule, 170 min., feature film, OV, SPF, released 12, recommended 14

Parsha, a poor son of a fisherman, is in love with the wealthy Aachie. When the taboo relationship is discovered, they are threatened by their families. Their rapid flight leads them into the slums of the big city, where their love will be put to the test. The young couple manages the crisis, builds a life for themselves, and has a child – and just then their past catches up with them. What begins as a light-hearted Bollywood-style musical comedy reveals itself to be a social realist drama that looks critically at Indian society and the caste system with its inequality, misery, violence, and desperation. SAIRAT brings reality into focus – a reality that the kitschy and colorful Bollywood cinema seeks to veil. (MK)
