40 YEARS OF CHILDREN’S FILM AT OBERHAUSEN

40 years of children’s films in Oberhausen

Short films for children have been shown in Oberhausen for the past 40 years. In 1978, the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen invited young audiences to watch unusual films for the first time: animations, fiction films, documentaries and experimental films from around the world. Nine productions from nine countries and spanning four decades are exemplary of this great diversity: they include the humorous documentation of a taste experiment to adventure stories and imaginary journeys into the realm of animals, but also films in which curiosity, anger, rage and reconciliation play the leading role. They give an insight into what short films for children in Oberhausen have been, are, and can be.

MINIS PROGRAMME 3

MINIS PROGRAMME 3: SAND-ANIMATION

On Thursday, October 5 and Friday, October 6, everything has to do with the element sand. Sand artist Alla Chruikova from Munich emphasises that “sand is a material particularly familiar to children.” In numerous live sand-shows in front of child audiences, she has experienced the inspiring effect of sand on children: “It has a special plasticity; it is light, luminous, and flowing at the same time.” She will present two of her sand-animations (WOMAN BELOW THE ICE, DE 2003, 8 min. and A FAT LITTLE LADY, DE 2005, 3 min.) as well as a live sand-show at the Caligari FilmBühne in Wiesbaden on October 5 and at the cinema at the Deutsches Filmmuseum on October 6. Children will be able to try out the animation technique that creates figures and stories from sand.

MINIS PROGRAMME 2

MINIS PROGRAMME 2: DOCUMENTARIES FOR NURSERIES

This programme is presented by “doxs! documentaries for children and youth”. For 16 years, the Duisburg festival has organised a diverse programme that covers the whole aesthetic spectrum of current European documentaries – with films suitable even for the youngest cinemagoers. On Wednesday, October 4, LUCAS is offering “documentaries for nurseries” in the Hafen 2 cinema in Offenbach. Accompanied by educators, the films focus on the world as experienced by children, number games and surprising insights into things that are normally concealed, such as the inner life of a compost pile (including: ILLUSTRATION: COMPOSTAGE, FR 2014, director Elise Auffray, documentary, 3 min.).

Meanwhile, the cinema is offering a well-matched film programme (THUMBELINA, DE 1954, animation, 10 min., director: Lotte Reiniger and STORY OF THE ANGRY WITCH, NL 1999, animation, 10 min., director: Didi Hoving). The festival for young audiences has been organised by the artist collective Taartrovers for 15 years and is specialised on the conception of programmes for museums and artistic projects in the Netherlands.

JULIANA

JULIANA

PE 1988, D: Fernando Espinoza, Alejandro Legaspi, 90 Min.
Fiction, OV with Ger. ST, with German voice-over, FSK age rating 6+, recommended for 10+
LUCAS 1989

Juliana lives in one of the Barriadas, the slum areas of Lima. The 13-year-old wants to get away from home and from her stepfather who is abusive towards her and her mother: to be independent like her brother Clavito and roam the city buses as a street musician for crook Don Pedro. As a girl, however, she stands no chance in the gang, and so she bravely cuts her hair to become „Julian“. Soon it dawns on her that Don Pedro only uses her and the boys. When on top of that her deceit is revealed, Juliana has nothing more to lose: she stands up to Don Pedro. The film takes a nearly documentary approach to its protagonists’ lives – all of which are amateur actors – and thus radiates the force of a bold utopia.
