MINIS PROGRAMME 3

MINIS PROGRAMME 3: SAND-ANIMATION

On Thursday, October 5 and Friday, October 6, everything has to do with the element sand. Sand artist Alla Chruikova from Munich emphasises that “sand is a material particularly familiar to children.” In numerous live sand-shows in front of child audiences, she has experienced the inspiring effect of sand on children: “It has a special plasticity; it is light, luminous, and flowing at the same time.” She will present two of her sand-animations (WOMAN BELOW THE ICE, DE 2003, 8 min. and A FAT LITTLE LADY, DE 2005, 3 min.) as well as a live sand-show at the Caligari FilmBühne in Wiesbaden on October 5 and at the cinema at the Deutsches Filmmuseum on October 6. Children will be able to try out the animation technique that creates figures and stories from sand.

THE GIRL DOWN LOCH ÄNZI / DAS MÄDCHEN VOM ÄNZILOCH

CH 2016, D: Alice Schmid, 87 Min.,
Fiction / documentary, OV with Eng. ST, released for 6+, recommended for 11+

Summer holidays in the Swiss mountains: On her family’s solitary farm, twelve-year-old Laura is awaiting the visit by Thom, who is coming from the city for a week to help out in the stables and on the farm. At last she has somebody to talk to about Loch Änzi, a legendary gorge in the mountains that is supposedly haunted. The film captures the voices of the villagers in tableau vivant-style images and combines them with entries in Laura’s diary, thus gently revealing the inner life of its young protagonist. A blend of documentary and fiction, the film observes and listens closely and captures, quite literally, even the undertones: steps on the forest floor, rustling straw, summer flies – to this girl, they are the world.

In the Greek fables that Valentino’s dad tells him during the last holidays in the family’s soon to be sold country house, women appear as unpredictable and mythical creatures. But the camera tells a different story. Its poetic imagery captures what is missing in such an intense way that the absence of Valentino’s mother becomes almost tangible. She is present as the father initiates his son in the family’s traditions while fishing, hiking and playing. Filled with new impressions Valentino starts developing his own rituals. The farewell thus also marks a cautious new beginning.

Ethel and Ernest were the parents of the renowned British author and illustrator Raymond Briggs. Based on his graphic novel of the same name (1998), this lovingly hand-drawn animated feature film honours  their memory. It tells the story of two modest, working-class Londoners from the 1920s up to the 1970s. Ranging from the Great Depression to World War II, the invention of the atomic bomb to the moon landing, the rise of radio to the first television sets, they witness radical changes. The film depicts the defining social and political moments of the 20th century and their effect on private life, thus portraying the joys and fears of a whole generation of so-called common people.
