Welcome to LUCAS #40!
LUCAS has reason to celebrate: For the 40th time Germany’s oldest festival for young film lovers is offering a wide spectrum of international fiction, documentary, animation and experimental films in the heart of Frankfurt. We have put together a special anniversary programme that promises thrilling competitions. The festival’s highlight is Family Day on Tuesday, October 3, 2017.
During the LUCAS festival week from Sunday, October 1 to Saturday, October 7, more than 70 films from around 35 countries will be screened at five different venues in Frankfurt, Offenbach and Wiesbaden. Excitingly, many of the filmmakers will be present as well, so young film enthusiasts will have the opportunity to ask any questions they might have.
Competitions 8+ and 13+
From adventure films to comedies, the contestants in the age groups 8+ and 13+ will make for compelling competitions, as there are seven different awards to be won.
Children and grownups make up the jury that choses the winners, while members of the audience will also have the chance to cast their votes. The award winners will be announced at the award ceremony on October 7 – red carpet included!
Film programmes 4+ to 18+
Everyone is welcome at LUCAS. Aimed at the youngest viewers, the “Minis” section contains an selection of short films that are age-appropriate for the little ones. Meanwhile our “Classics” section invites all age groups to rediscover great films from days gone by.
The “Young European Cinephiles” section brings six young people from Germany and Slovenia together in Frankfurt. They will present their favourite films that follow an interesting trend, namely that of the cinematic hybrid form. You can find out which of our other programmes were developed by young film lovers themselves on the following page and in the “Get involved!” section.
Our motto “Get involved!” hopes to encourage children and teenagers to participate themselves and engage on a personal level with film as a medium and an independent form of art.
Industry & programme of side events
With an ambitiously curated feature film programme, numerous German premieres and an emphasis on participation, LUCAS provides professionals with an innovative platform within the festival landscape. A panel discussion is devoted to the topic of “young film-making and young audiences”, while a professional convention hosted by the Gesellschaft für Medienpädagogik und Kommunikationskultur (Professional Association for Media Education) encourages industry networking.
