Katharina Mückstein’s L’ANIMALE leads us into the province of Lower Austria. This is where Mati plans to become a veterinarian and move away from the small town near Vienna as soon as she has graduated. Currently, she mostly hangs around a group of boys, races on motocross machines through the quarry and does not shy away from fights. But similarly to her parent’s relationship at home, the tensions in Mati’s gang begin to grow. This film on the contradictions in coming of age between passion and reason convinces with brilliant performances and dry humor. (CS)
