MADELINE’S MADELINE

MADELINE’S MADELINE

US 2018. D: Josephine Decker. 93 min. Fiction. Eng. OV
Suitable from age 12. Recommended from age 15

In an experimental theatre group, Madeline is looking for sanctuary from her overprotective mother, who watches her excessive playing with identities with worry. On the stage, the pubescent girl can be just as she feels: girl, cat, turtle. Initially, she receives support from the charismatic theatre director Evangeline. But then Evangeline ruthlessly exploits the talent of the fourteen-year old. The dramaturgy of the film, the outstanding cast and the elaborate play of camera through movement and blur make Josephine Decker’s coming-of-age drama an unusual filmic experience. (CS)
