Motherwell, Scotland has been a dreary place since the decline of the steel industry. Gemma and her friends smoke weed, fight each other and swear in a strong accent. Her grandfather tries to get her off the streets with boxing. Pregnant and in a relationship with daredevil Pat, Gemma finally moves into a residential block. One night her buddy JP is beaten up and remains paralyzed on one side. But things also change radically for Gemma. Violence and lack of perspective, lust for life and fighting spirit – SCHEME BIRDS tells the story with poetic force as a documentary long-term observation.
