ISL/DK/KRO 2015, Director: Rúnar Rúnarsson, 99 min., feature film, OV with English subtitles, released 12, recommended 14

In the forbidding barrenness of Iceland and banished into the custody of his alcoholic father, the 16-year-old Ari seeks affection, meaning, and identity. Although the coming-of-age tale is accompanied by typical genre elements of initiation – first love, first drug use, first sex –, Ari does not experience the pathway from innocent choir boy to young manhood as particularly happy or liberating. Rúnar Rúnnarson relates the emotional tour de force of his sensitive protagonist in a way that is unconventionally slow, laconic, and sparing of words. Rather he allows the film images, faces, looks, spaces, landscapes, and atmospheres coagulate into allegories and representations of the soul. He lets Ari’s silent lamentation about the loss of childhood, security, innocence and trust resonate in images. (MK)
