THE KID / DER VAGABUND UND DAS KIND
US 1921, D: Charles Chaplin, 54 Min.
Fiction, without dialogue, FSK age rating: all ages
An unwed woman abandons her newborn child in a limousine. However, instead of ending up with ladies and gentlemen, the child is picked up by a vagrant. The Tramp – Chaplin’s icon of the silent film era – raises the boy with great affection and introduces him to the vagabond life. He recruits the child as his partner in crime, making sure at the same time that his neck is properly washed. Their intimate relationship comes under threat when the authorities try to take John from his father. In his first feature film, Chaplin contemplates childhood “with a smile – and perhaps a tear” and combines slapstick comedy with social drama in a unique way.
