THE TRUMAN SHOW
US 1998. D: Peter Weir. A: Andrew Niccol. Fiction. 103 min. OV with Ger. ST. Suitable from age 12. Recommended from age 13
The film tells the unique story of Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), who seems to lead an average life: He lives in a quiet but friendly area, is married, and has a job and a good friend with whom he spends a lot of time. Nothing seems unusual to Truman until one day he finds out that his whole life is the centre of a big TV show and the whole world is watching.
The film is startling and gripping from the beginning to the end, thanks to Jim Carrey’s terrific performance, a very original story and a great script. THE TRUMAN SHOW keeps the audience captivated in following the protagonist’s struggle for truth and self-determination. It depicts the relationship between the individual and the media society as a break from »captivity«. A reflection on empowerment opposed to ignorance, and, more generally, on the desire for freedom.
