For Nianankoro one thing is clear: he would like to become a healer – just like his father Soma. But his father fears the competition of his son and uses all means necessary to prevent him from becoming his equal. Ultimately Nianankoro’s mother sends her son off on a journey, during which he is supposed to gain knowledge to challenge his father. In impressive imagery, the film tells of the young man’s coming-of-age during his long marches through the savannah, the rivers, valleys, and hills. Almost twenty years after its premiere, YEELEN is still considered one of the most important films of African cinema. (SW)
