YECS 2017

YOUNG EUROPEAN CINEPHILES

WHAT IS TRUE AND WHAT IS FAKE? With the ‘YECs’, the young Europe is coming to Frankfurt – six teenagers from Germany and Slovenia are presenting their favourite films that reflect an interesting trend, namely that of the cinematic hybrid form.

“We live in a world where the difference between reality and fiction, right and wrong no longer seems to be of great importance”, observes Lilith (15). “Unfortunately, the internet plays an important role in the confusion of truth and falsehood – just think of fake news.” Increasingly, filmmakers also no longer want to commit themselves to a single cinematic form: documentary and fictional forms become mixed in the same way as animations and live action films. Participant Lilith sees hybrid films as an opportunity “to raise critical awareness for these issues through art”.

All six YECs are seasoned film lovers – cinephiles. Three LUCAS-alumni and their jury colleagues from the Slovenian EYE ON FILM festival have curated an ambitious film programme that considers the question: “What is true and what is fake?”

On three evenings, the teenagers are presenting their own programme that will make for interesting discussions.
