SchulKinoTage: Understanding History, Shaping the Future

In various German fede­ral sta­tes, sta­te elec­tions in September could lead to dra­stic chan­ges in edu­ca­ti­on, cul­tu­re, and fun­ding poli­ci­es. These include, for exam­p­le, res­truc­tu­ring of cur­ri­cu­la regar­ding the cul­tu­re of remem­brance, a stron­ger empha­sis on natio­nal iden­ti­ty, and the rea­lignment or reduc­tion of fun­ding for indi­vi­du­al demo­cra­cy, diver­si­ty, or inte­gra­ti­on pro­jects. These deve­lo­p­ments rai­se fun­da­men­tal ques­ti­ons about the self-con­cep­ti­on of a demo­cra­tic socie­ty. A look into the National Socialist past can help to cri­ti­cal­ly reflect on poli­ti­cal deve­lo­p­ments and to keep the importance of human rights, demo­cra­tic values, and social diver­si­ty in mind.

The SchulKinoTage in Hessia aim to encou­ra­ge young peo­p­le to enga­ge with the past and, abo­ve all, to con­nect it with the pre­sent and their own lived rea­li­ty. To build this bridge, a cura­ted pro­gram of his­to­ri­cal archi­ve films and cur­rent pro­duc­tions will be shown. The goal is to open up new per­spec­ti­ves for young peo­p­le through films they rare­ly encoun­ter in their ever­y­day lives, to break down ent­ren­ched thought pat­terns, and to sti­mu­la­te reflection.
