PERSEPOLIS

PERSEPOLIS

Tehran, 1978: Young Marjane dreams of changing society for the better as the “last prophetess of the galaxy”. After the fall of the Shah, there is a spirit of optimism in her cosmopolitan, politically engaged family — until the Islamic Republic and the new government bring fear, censorship and repression. Marjane rebels in private with punk, irony and defiance. Nevertheless, she cannot live out her youth freely. To protect her, her parents send her abroad alone. In PERSEPOLIS, Marjane Satrapis weaves her autobiographical graphic novel into a visually powerful black-and-white animation about growing up in times of political violence. (SAC)
