A TEENAGER WITNESSES THE 1980 OUTBREAK OF THE WAR BETWEEN IRAN AND IRAQ AND WANTS TO SAVE MORE THAN ONLY HIS OWN FUTURE
When the First Gulf War begins in 1980 and Iraq bombs the Iranian oil metropolis of Abadan, Omid is just 14 years old. While his mother and younger siblings have already fled, Omid has stayed with his grandfather. From then on, he delivers food and meets different people: soldiers, an ex-engineer and his cats, or Pari, a girl his age whose mother is a famous singer. Omid wants to find his missing older brother and eventually an escape route from his imprisoned hometown. From the point of view of the teenage main character, the animated film vividly shows what war means and at the same time narrates about hope, resistance, solidarity and the future. (KT)

Biography
Sepideh Farsi moved from Tehran to Paris to study math. Abroad she devoted herself to the art of film though. She made documentaries about the Iranian diaspora, about homeland, identity and broke taboos of Iranian cinema with films like RED ROSE. Her artistic exploration of contemporary Iranian politics led to her banishment from Iran in 2009. THE SIREN is Sepideh’s first animated feature film.
