MULTI-LAYERED MILIEU STUDY ABOUT A FILM SHOOT IN A FRENCH BANLIEUE
A director wants to shoot a feature film in the Picasso neighborhood, a suburb of Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France. In search of authentic young actors for his project, he holds a casting session at the local school. There he chooses Lily, Ryan, Maylis and Jesse, four teenagers from the neighborhood who are actually confronted with completely different problems in their everyday lives. The residents of the suburb are both surprised and dismayed by his decision: Why would anyone want to portray “the worst ones” on the big screen? Playing with the film-within-a-film theme, the boundaries between fiction and harsh reality become increasingly blurred. How far can a shoot go under the guise of authenticity? (KP)

Biography
Romane Gueret studied film at the Sorbonne in Paris, while Lise Akoka studied psychology and trained as an actor. In 2014, the two filmmakers met while casting for a feature film. A year later, they directed their short film CHASSE ROYALE as their first shared project for which they won the Short Film Award at the Directors’ Fortnight of the Cannes International Film Festival in 2016. In the summer of 2021, they made their first feature film, THE WORST ONES, which was included in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2022.
