MINIS PROGRAM: STILLNESS AND MOVEMENT
MINIS PROGRAM: STILLNESS AND MOVEMENT
CA/CH/FR/TW/RU 1896–2017. D: div. Without dialogue. Released from age 0. Recommended from age 3.
Film was the first medium that could record and reproduce movement. It was a huge sensation – big enough to turn everyday things like the arrival of a train into a box-office hit at the movies. Movement in film creates endless possibilities: Time can run backwards, brushstrokes come to life and ancient paintings are transformed into moving worlds to explore. The film program is moderated with creative activities and lasts about an hour in total.
ARRIVAL OF A TRAIN AT LA CIOTAT
L’Arrivée d’un Train en Gare de La Ciotat. FR 1896. D: Auguste and Louis Lumière. 1 min.
A train slowly approaches us and stops. Some passengers leave the train before others get on. Apparently, the audience thought the train was real during the first performance and fled for fear of being run over.
MY MOM IS AN AIRPLANE!
Moia Mama – Samolet. RU 2013. D: Yulia Aronova. 7 min.
Different people have different moms, and they’re all cool in their own way. But there are few things better than having a mother who is an airplane.
DEMOLITION OF A WALL
Démolition d’un Mur. FR 1896. D: Cinématographe Lumière. 2 min.
Some men use tools to tear down a wall. After a while, it collapses and then rebuilds itself as if by magic. An early movie trick that turns back time.
RETOUCHES
Retouches. CA/CH 2008. D: Georges Schwizgebel. 6 min.
Things, people, places and movements are all connected: The rippling of the sea water resembles the movement of a windshield wiper, the movements of a hurdler resemble the flight of birds.
TRAVELLING THROUGH BRUSH AND INK
Bimo xinglü. TW 2017. D: Annlin Chao. 4 min.
A piece of food from the beak of a bird becomes a human being who wanders through landscapes from paintings of Chinese art history. As a being made up of colors and shapes, he can transform himself again and again.
