A GIRL UNKNOWN
A GIRL UNKNOWN
An atmospheric coming-of-age drama about a girl whose fate is not an exception
Zou Jing’s feature film debut traces the childhood and adolescence of Wang Juan over several years, as she is passed from one foster family to another at an early age. For her, affection proves to be nothing more than a fleeting experience. What remains, however, is her desire to find a permanent home. Even with her latest set of parents in the city, however, she still fails to find a sense of security. Nevertheless, the girl repeatedly experiences moments when she feels as though she has finally found a place to belong. This feeling is sensitively captured by the camera and underscored by Valentin Hadjad’s understated score. To counteract the uncertainty and repeated upheavals in her life, Wang Juan’s only recourse is to assert herself. (LGR)
