THE ALTAR BOYS
THE ALTAR BOYS
Balaclavas in the name of God: rough coming-of-age about religiously rapping Robin Hoods
Incense and hip hop, rough neighbourhood and the golden-gleaming church: Filip’s life is not short on contrasts. He, “Gucci”, “Chicken” and his brother “Little Chicken” are altar boys who take their priest’s apocalyptic sermons at face value. They feel personally responsible for the injustice around them. They record confessions with a simple goal: relieve suffering, punish sins. One more rap song as a manifesto and Filip’s gang becomes accusers, judges and executioners. But responsibility and secrecy weigh on these Robin Hoods in hoodies, and for Filip the line between good and evil blurs. A breathless film about solidarity and strength of faith that still doesn’t make you invulnerable. (WB)
